Auction record: Sunrise Ruby, a flawless 25.59-carat Burmese “pigeon’s blood” gem. Mined in Myanmar and named after a poem by the 13th-century Sufi poet Rumi, it sold for a record US $30.42 million at Sotheby’s in 2015.

More recently, in 2023, the Estrela de Fura — a 55.22-carat unheated Mozambique ruby — sold for US $34.8 million, shattering records as one of the largest and most valuable gem-quality rubies ever discovered.
